1. The Cathedral
The old Empire-style centre is exceptionally harmonious area, and its heart comprises the Senate Square and the Cathedral, the best-known building in the city.

2. Ateneum Art Museum - the Finnish National Gallery
Vast collection of approx. 20,000 works of Finnish art and modern art from abroad from 1740-960. 

 

3. Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church)
With its natural stonewalls and magnificent copper tread ceiling (22 km) this church, completed in 1969, has become one of Helsinki's ‘must visit' places. Architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen.

4. The Cathedral and the Uspenski Cathedral
When Helsinki became the capital of Finland in 1812, the centre was established around the Senate Square with the Cathedral. The Uspenski Cathedral is the biggest Orthodox Church in the Nordic region.

5. Finnish Design, Tuisku bowls
The clear, uncluttered and minimalist style characteristic of Finnish design is particularly popular.

6. Sibelius Monument
Unveiled in 1967 in the Sibelius Park, in memory of Finland's national composer, Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). Sculptress Eila Hiltunen.

7. Sight seeing boats at the Market Place
The Market Place is Helsinki's most international and famous market. The booths sell traditional market foods and treats, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs. A unique and exciting way to discover Helsinki's sights is to choose a sight seeing by boat, departures are at the Market Place.

8. Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art
Named after the Greek letter X (chi) meaning crossing or decussation, and designed by architect Steven Holl.

9. Suomenlinna Sea Fortress
The fortress is built on islands just off the coast of Helsinki and is one of Finland's cultural treasures. The construction work began in the 1700s when Finland was part of Sweden. The sea fortress has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

10. Stockmann department store
Stockmann is the biggest department store in the Nordic region and is surrounded by the main shopping streets, Aleksanterinkatu, Mannerheimintie and Northern and Southern Esplanade.
