1.The Old Town
The famous old town of Klaipeda with its beautiful Theatre Square and the graceful sculpture of Annchen von Tharau is a must for any visitor.
2. Memelburg Castle Museum
The castle of Memelburg at the mouth of the Dane River was built by Teutonic Knights in 1252 and gave birth to Klaipeda city. Today, the castle museum and the excavation site tell its fascinating story.
3. Klaipeda Clock Museum
Klaipeda Clock Museum presents the development of the construction of time measuring devices from older times until today; originals, models or reconstructed copies of ancient calendars, sun, water, fire and sand clocks, mechanical time measuring devices. A part of a 19th century park is still preserved near the museum and a large “quator” clock is on display in the closed courtyard. Music festivals, poetry, theatre, dancing eve and other events also take place in Clock Museum courtyard.
4. National Maritime Museum and Dolphinarium
The aquarium has been built right into one of the old forts dating back from when Klaipeda was a maritime stronghold. It occupies two floors inside a round central building within the old fortress and has a comprehensive collection of fish species. Outside this building, you will find several kinds of seals and sea lions, plus penguins. As for the dolphinarium, it has got 5 trained, bottlenosed Black Sea dolphins. During summer, a number of concerts are held at the museum.
5. Museum of Lithuania Minor
The Museum of Lithuania Minor is Klaipeda’s regional ethnographic museum. It traces the local history back to the regions earliest inhabitants. The museum houses the departments of Archaeology, Ethnography, Cataloguing and Conservation, and History and Restoration.
6. Neo Gothic buildings
In Klaipeda city, you will find fine examples of Neo Gothic architecture, e.g. the post office with the carillon and the 19th century Prussian military barracks, now a part of Klaipeda University.
7. Farmers’ Market
Lithuania is a country passionate about its produce, and nowhere is this more visible than at the farmers’ market. Small producers from surrounding villages gather in this central food Mecca to sell their leafy greens and fleshy meats.
8. “Svyturys” (Lighthouse)
The Lighthouse is the oldest Brewery in Lithuania (1784) and has always been well known all over the country for the highest quality local beer. Lately its beer became gold medallist of world competitions and famous all over Europe.
9. The Church of Mary Queen of Peace
This fairly modern house of worship, built between 1960 and 1962, was turned into a concert hall by the Soviets. The church was restored to its original purpose on November 25, 1988. From the tower, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the city.
10. Neringa and the Curonian Spit The Curonian Spit can boast of having probably the best beaches in the Baltic region. A strip of Neringa beaches (25-70 metres in width) is covered with pure and white sand. On December 2, 2000 the Curonian Spit was inscribed into UNESCO World Heritage List as a valuable and unique cultural landscape in the Baltic region.
