Rostock - Attractions





 

 

1. St. Marie’s Church
The construction of Rostock’s large cathedral began in the middle of the 14th century. Inside the church, its decoration and the famous astrological clock from 1472 are well worth a visit. From the tower, there is a magnificent view over the city.

2. St. Peter’s church tower
The St. Petri church is a basilica built around the time of the foundation of Rostock. Its impressive tower, 117 metres tall, was rebuilt after the Second World War.

3. Zum Heiligen Kreuz convent
The old convent houses Rostock’s Museum of Cultural History. The art collection includes masterpieces from the Middle Ages and up to present time. The Kröpeliner Tor shows changing exhibitions.

4. Town hall
The Town hall with its seven tower gothic facade was built in the middle of the 13th century, making it one of the city’s oldest buildings.

5. The Katherine monastery with Academy of Music and Theatre
The monastery and its church built by Franciscan monks have a history dating back to 1223. Since April 2001, it has been the regional Academy of Music and Theatre.

6. Steintor and the city walls
South of Neuer Markt is the Steintor, the most famous of the gates in the old city wall. It is one of only three surviving gates of the original fortifications of Rostock. The crowning on top of the gate was added during the Renaissance.

7. House tree house
A combined warehouse and dwelling from the late 15th century. A large interior hall with the so-called “House Tree” has been preserved, a mighty oaken support bearing the ground floor ceiling.

8. University
The main building of Rostock University and the university square are fine examples of North European renaissance architecture.
 
9. Zoo
The Zoo of Rostock is the biggest zoo on the Baltic coast. Its surface measures 56 hectares, which are used for 1,700 animals of 360 species.

10. Warnemünde with Alter Strom and Lighthouse
Warnemünde is a famous seaside resort just north of Rostock. Today, it is a fashionable town with a large marina. The old town alongside the waterfront has it own very special atmosphere with lots of cosy cafés and restaurants.
