Climate St. Petersburg is characterized by an intermediate climate. It is quite mild & humid, with frequent fogs & rains. Because snow can fall as late as May, the best time to visit St. Petersburg is June-August. Temperatures during these months can reach 20°C. Most tourists arrive in June for the celebrated White Nights, when it doesn't become dark until 2:00 a.m. - and then only slightly. Fall, with its cooler temperatures, arrives in mid-September, and in October temperatures drop substantially to around 10°C. Snow does not usually fall until December. By January, temperatures can drop as low as -25°C, and the wind coming in off the Gulf of Finland can make it seem a lot colder.
Tipping/Tax Tips are discretionary but not customary. In some places they are considered a good custom (such as restaurants and bars), or you may wish to tip for special service. At restaurants, tip 10% for exceptional service. In some establishments, a 10% service charge is included in the bill.
