It’s the capital for Åland’s 6,500 islands and at the same time, with its 11,000 inhabitants, a picturesque and friendly town.  The inhabitants are spoilt with spectacular nature in abundance and summertime, they enjoy the light Nordic summer evenings when the sun barely sets and the islands attract visitors from far and away. The Islands of Peace, as Åland is often called, is a demilitarised territory. This means that no military forces may be stationed in the Islands and that the territory may not be fortified.
