Plaque marks ship alley in Gdynia

On 29th August 2006 a plaque commemorating the Cruise Baltic Project was unveiled in Gdynia in the only “Ship Alley” in the North of Europe. The project’s two Polish partners participated in the unveiling celebration which took place in the City of Gdynia. Cruise Baltic Project director Signe Adamsen unveiled the plaque together with the mayor of Gdynia, Wojciech Szczurek.

The ceremony was accompanied by the opening of an exhibition of photographs from all 19 destinations in the Cruise Baltic Project. The photos are currently being exhibited in the City Hall’s Gallery.

The “Ship Alley” was inaugurated in Gdynia in 2001. Commemorative plaques made from Italian green granite are mounted on the Southern Pier – Pomeranian Quay - in the heart of the city. Each plaque is engraved with a picture of a ship and its name; the coats of arms of Gdynia; and the ship owner’s logo. This inaugurates the first Cruise Baltic Plaque.
Ship Alley highlights the traditional maritime character of Gdynia. Cruise vessels have called at Gdynia since the inter-war years.
