The large port of Rostock played an important role
in the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages. The economic power from
the trade gave natural rise to culture and education. The city
houses for example one of Europe's oldest universities, founded in
1419. The university gave Rostock the name “The Northern
Light”.
After the Reunification between East and West Germany, the old town
centre has been delicately restored with fine examples of Medieval
Redbrick Gothic such as the Marien-, Nikolai- und
Heilig-Kreuz-church. The remains of the old fortification are also
worth visiting (Steintor, Kröpeliner Tor).
Pedestrian streets and shopping arcades invite to take a stroll and
experience the pulse of the city. And if you want a contrast to the
busy city life, you should pay a visit to the nearby seaside
resort, Warnemünde. Here the old lighthouse (Alten Strom) soars
over a modern marina and the long, broad beach with its idyllic
promenade. From Rostock, it is easy to make a daytour to Germany’s
vibrant capital, Berlin.
