MARIEHAMN - port of the last windjammers!

Mariehamn, the charming capital of the Åland Islands is characterized by a laid-back islander lifestyle and a strong maritime culture. The town was once the home of the world’s largest oceanic sailing ships fleet and is therefore called “port of the last windjammers”. The cozy and small city center is just a short walk (900 m) away from the port and it offers restaurants, cafes, shops as well as beaches, great sights and local attractions. Getting around in Mariehamn is easy and the friendly locals with good English skills are glad to help you in any way they can. Åland is widely known for its beautiful and unique archipelago, and it offers spectacular ways to experience the nature through e. g. golf, fishing, cycling or canoeing/kayaking. Or why not just lay back and enjoy beautiful sights and the great culinary experiences Åland can offer. Did you know that the world’s oldest champagne was found in a wreck outside Aland in 2010 and that Åland cuisine is one of the best kept secrets of Scandinavian kitchen? Åland welcomes international cruise ships with a length of max. 220 meters and a depth of 7,1 meters.

The historical Kastelholm Castle

Dive into history with a visit to the Kastelholm Castle ruins, where you can walk in the footsteps of past Ålanders and immerse yourself in a fascinating piece of history.

Walk alongside history in the Bomarsund Center

Bomarsund Fortress was once one of the most magnificent creations that had ever been built in Åland, the fortress was destroyed during the Crimean war in 1854. The fascinating Bomarsund ruins are getting a completely new visitation center, which will open its doors in June 2022, welcoming all guests to experience a unique piece of history in an interesting environment.

Artisan gin made in the Åland Islands

A stone’s throw away from Kastelhom’s Castle ruins you can find Åland Distillery, where Åland’s first own gin is brewed. Go on a brewery tour, or try sampling different delicious drinks.

Silverskär Islands
