In May 2019, Cruise Baltic and 29 destinations, a total of 8 countries, created and signed a new manifesto – The Cruise Baltic Sustainability Manifesto – with the aim making cruising a sustainable vacation offer in 2030 through economic, social and environmental sustainability.
This May 2020, Cruise Baltic published the Cruise Baltic Sustainability Report; a follow-up on the objectives of the Manifesto. It reflects the most relevant initiatives taken by the Cruise Baltic ports and destinations during 2019. The report offers a unique insight into the initiatives towards the key vision of the Manifesto: making cruising a sustainable vacation offer in 2030.
“In May 2019, we all returned home from the Baltic Sustainable Cruise Conference in Copenhagen where the Manifesto was signed to execute the goals we set together. A year later, the Cruise Baltic Sustainability Report shows that the Manifesto makes a sustained difference and that we together take major steps towards a more sustainable future. It is fantastic to experience such great motivation and not least initiatives creating sustainable changes across the entire industry,” says Claus Bødker, Director of Cruise Baltic.
The initiatives are broad, ranging from inviting locals to plant flowers in the cruise area of Tallinn, to implementing new wastewater initiatives in Fredericia, Kristiansand and Rønne, and new bike and Segway docks for cruise guests to explore the city in a greener way in Gdansk, Klaipeda and Malmö.

Sustainability plays a key role throughout the network
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the cruise industry had to adjust to a new reality, in which sustainability also plays a key role to strengthen the cruise industry and get it back on track.
Sustainability is also expressed in various other aspects of the network. In February 2020, Cruise Baltic announced that the network had become completely paperless, with the only printed material being business cards made from 100% recycled t-shirt offcuts. Additionally, the Cruise Baltic booth at Seatrade Europe in 2019 was produced sustainably with recycled and re-used materials.
The different initiatives to become more sustainable continues throughout the network and the vision remains the same: making cruising a sustainable vacation offer in 2030 and generally making the Baltic Sea Region a more sustainable region.
